Kurt Vile nabbed a strong following with his ten-track confessional Smoke Ring For My Halo, and it seems like he’s outdone himself with the sun-bleached haze of Wakin on a Pretty Daze. Vile has released a video for insistently cathartic single “Never Run Away.” The video follows an ever-pensive Vile—clad in all white—strumming away in the most desolate pockets of an unnamed city.

Spitting that Jersey salt and spewing irreverent jibes partly for the sake of the workingman, all for the sake of saving punk, Titus Andronicus have become the rising champions of rock in their seven-year career. Snagging their name from the eponymous Shakespeare play, Titus Andronicus has expertly retained all of the tact and none of the pomp of their English class inspiration. Chugging out three albums and a slew of EP’s—including a Civil War concept album, complete with a glorious bagpipe solo—Titus pushed rock into ambitious, deeply calculated territory.
Rolling Stone touted Titus as “one of the seven best new bands of 2010” and backed that title with their latest release Local Business. Tugging at the brackish roots of their home city, the Jersey quintet have learned to pack a punch, and more importantly, when to store it in their back pocket. The five-strong group, tromping through swashes of reverb and feedback fuzz, proves that their former tour slogan was no joke—punk is, indeed, back.
