Chicago Ideas Curiosity Series Presents

CHICAGO’S CREATIVE IDENTITY: GETTING WEIRD with JOI ITO

$15 GA // Doors: 6PM / Show 6:30PM // All Ages

During this Conversation, Joi Ito will sit down with IDEO Chicago Executive Portfolio Director Neil Stevenson to discuss Chicago’s creative identity, and the role the city plays in embracing culture, art and experimentation.

Joi Ito is one of the most prolific entrepreneurs working in the technology sphere today. He’s the Director of the MIT Media Lab, and has been involved with organizations like Twitter, Sony and the MacArthur Foundation. He’s now a giant in his industry, but Ito has humble beginnings right here in Chicago. He spent a stint at the University of Chicago during the late ‘80s, during which time he was a regular DJ at the Metro and SmartBar—he was a part of the subculture that was the birthplace of house music.

Chicago is a very unique city. Its identity is cushioned somewhere between a fast-paced, sprawling metropolis like New York and an eclectic city that’s all about getting weird like Portland. There’s a civic pride in the city that’s hard to find anywhere else, and there’s a level of creativity here that is palpably contagious.
